12/11/07 blog prompt

1). One thing that certainly struck me in this book is how it is related to the real world. I got this idea from when the tribe starts getting seperated from when the christian missionaries are coming to the tribe and seperating groups into the christians and the tribal religion. It relates to the real world because of how in other countries now days there is seperation of religion and even causing wars over the issue.
2). I am starting to like this book more than i did in the beginning because of how the story is starting to progress. Before about the 60th page in the book it was all nice and perfect but to me i kno things are never perfect so when there is some action starting to be revealed i like it more.

12/08/07 Lit. Circle Pgs.1-77

For the first literature circle our group was assigned to read the first 33 pages of our book. The beginning or this book was a little confusing to me because of the way Achebe wrote his ideas. As I further read the book i appreciated his writing style much more than i had for many reasons including his descriptiveness and how he describes the characters. I really thought about what spencer said about Acheebes writing style. He told us that it may because Achebe is african that he is writing in a tribal sense rather than just for either himself or just one important person in the tribe. So far this book is starting to get interesting now that there is some actual action like when Okonkwo is beating up his wife.

Tap Water

The other half of ouur water project topic is about Tap water. Many think tap water is really bad and prefer to drink bottled water. I have read few articles agreeing with that infact none. All of which i have read are saying that tap water is in fact equal to or even better that bottled.

remmedial water

Remedial water system was created because before the system we now use, there was a problem with sediment building up in drains and so that meant every year the whole underground water system would be flushed. If the whole system would be flushed annually that meant a bunch of water would be lost and that is very costly in many ways. Now we have the system were the water is recycled to let the sediment out but not waste the water at the same time.

water resources for annes class!!!!

i have found some good sources explaining about water and much info on it... the websites are

http://serc.carleton.edu/microbelife/extreme/withoutwater/

these websites explain what life is with and without water and how important water is. I think that they are very good introductory articles for the project.

Pesticides and their effects on farming.

A Pesticide is basically any substance that prevents any pests or insects that like to feed off of plants and crops. Pesticides can be very effecient in many ways. Studies show that pesticides help improve the growth of the plants and crops because there are no pests to kill all the plants. If it wasnt for pesticides About 30 percent of potential crop production in the world is would be lost every year due to bad weather, pests and diseases.

White priviledge: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack

Peggy Mcintosh is a pretty good writer. A few things that i noticed was that in the first paragraph introducing her topic, she had refered to men as they. I think that is similar to the way people were using it in the seminar today. I am prepared for the seminar thats coming up tommorrow and i will be dominating the conversation. I promise.

First Post.. 9/4/07

Well, in class today we were reading the Aztec, Incan, and Mayan creation myths and I thought that they were so interesting and that some of them were believable. My favorite one was the Mayan one were the gods were proposing different things as people to live on earth. I liked this one because it went through like three different gods before one gave a suggestion that worked without any problems. To me this showed that even back in the Mayan times people thought that the gods were not perfect.

due thurs. 5/17

Indicate one sentence that you highlighted or underlined (give page number and section number) and write a short paragraph (at least 4 sentences) that explains why you underlined it or highlighted it. Be prepared to share this in discussion.

I underlined the sentence when socrates was attacking his prosecuter when his prosecuter got confused with another philosopher and said that socrates had said he believed in gods but he didint.

I thought that when socrates had confronted the guy and told him he confused him whith another philosopher, showed that the prosecuter was unprepared and could have been one of the strong points in his arguement.

The Apology Due wed. 5/16

1Q)Indicate one sentence that you highlighted or underlined (give page number and section number) and write a short paragraph (at least 4 sentences) that explains why you underlined it or highlighted it. Be prepared to share this in discussion.

1A)"Well then, Meletus, you've given ample proof that you have never bothered your head about the young; and you make it perfectly clear that you have never paid the slightest attention to the matters over which you are now indicting me."

This quote really jumped out at me. What this is, is the result of Socrates using Dialectics on one of his accusers. He simply tried to get the man to explain his accusation, and got his opinion on different matters related to that accusation. What ended up happening, was Meletus answered the questions just as Socrates had thought he would, and by doing so, showed a fatal flaw in his judgment or idea of judgment. I chose this because it seemed like an especially important quote, seeing as he ripped open one of the claims against him.

pericles funeral oration due wed. 5/15

-They try to make a government others want to model; they don't try to copy others.
-They don't try to block their land; they are open to the world
-Individuals are not only interested in their own affairs but in the state's as well.
-They make friends by doing good to others, not by receiving good from them.

These could be good to the debate because these might oppose Socrates' viewpoints. That means he would be the only one who opposes them, which could give them an excuse to attack him.

Due tues. 4/24

1) Indicate wheter your reading selection is pro or con for the above resolution and write three things that support the pro or con position on this issue.I am on the pro side.

2) Write a paragraph where you state your opinion on the issue. It should include some evidence from the reading, but it does not have to follow each viewpoint to the letter. You can also include ideas and evidence from other sources or individuals.

Due monday 4/23 viewpoints

1) For chapter 1, write three things based on the reading that supports the above resolution. This is the "pro" argument.
America is crippling because people want to express themselves too much. People cross the line, and the young have access to explicit content, so they have all this knowledge at a young age.

2) For chapter 2, write three things based on the reading that goes against the above resolution. This is the "con" argument.

If we had no freedom to express ourselves, everything would be heavily edited and screened. Also, there will be protests and rebels who will try to go outside of the law. America is really the only "free" country, and it should stay that way.

3) Write a paragraph where you state your opinion on the issue. It should include some evidence from the reading, but it does not have to follow each viewpoint to the letter. You can also include ideas and evidence from other sources or individuals.
I think that people should have the right to express any type of view, because if you censor that bad idea that someone has, there is a essentially a missing piece to the puzzle. I think it should be up to the parents, however, to block these ideas from small children until the time is right, according to them. We should not, however, block ideas and ban them completely and from everyone.

Don Imus contraversy

1. According to the NAACP, why should Imus be silenced?

Because his comments were racist and sexist, and they should not allow comments like that should not be said on televsion.

2. According to Frank Rich, why should Imus not be silenced?

Because he has freedom opf speech, and he doesn't make fun of a certain group of people, he makes fun of everyone.

3. Do you think Imus should be silenced? Why?

Not really, and maybe its because I don't get easily offended, but I think comments like that are OK. You are not being made to watch the show. You can get the remote and flip it to another channel. If on the other hand, you are being made to listen to racist comments that apply to you, and you are being forced, there is a problem. He has freedom of speech though, and you have the freedom to change the channel. Plus if the rutgers girls even said themselves that they werent upseted that much by the comments and that he is forgiven so it should not be a problem.

the republic due 4/18

1Q) What is your reaction to the ending of the section? What is good and/or bad about the type of society outlined by Socrates?

1A)I think that what he is doing by restricting the arts so much will have bad effects on the men. Because what he is really doing is constricting the men's creative release, and by doing so he will plant seeds of rebellion. In the end, it would probably help further the end of his utopian society. Pretty soon afterwards, they men will realize they do not believe in the restrictions, and start acting of their own accord. Whether that would be good or bad is unknown to me, but one things is for sure. Constrictions such as this are only there to be broken.

due 3/28

1. Short Paragraph – Personal Reflection: Before reading the selection from Plato write at least one full paragraph on this question: Why do you think Plato (or anyone else) would want to censor Homer? Think about Achilles as a "hero," and why or why not his personal characteristics are something that should be promoted, or not.

I think that they would ban Homer because it incites violence and ideas that would not be good for society, such as betrayal and disobedience to your superior. These ideas may influence people in society and make them do those things, causing a disturbance

2. Then read pp. 76-85 (Section b). Secondary or Literary Education)

3. Short Answers – Text based questions. Answer both questions, answers can be just a few sentences

a. According to Plato, what are some aspects of poetry that should be banned and why? In other words, how can poetry undermine the education of a Guardian?

And

b. What should poetry “teach” and why?

Characters that lie, or disrespect the king. Also decribing the afterlife as a dark, gloomy place. Also get rid of the horrifying names and places in the underworld.

4. If you were talking to Plato what would you say to him? Do you agree with his ideas? Do you think poetry, or literature in general, should be put to the purposes that he says it should?

Monday, March 26, 2007

due 3/27

1) Short Paragraph – Personal Reflection: Before reading the selection from Plato write at least one full paragraph on this question: Why do you think Plato (or anyone else) would want to censor Hesiod? Remember that Hesiod was the poet who wrote about the fight between the gods and the titans.
I think that they would ban Hesiod and Homer because both writings incite violence and ideas that would not be good for society, such as betrayal and disobedience to your superior. These ideas may influence people in society and make them do those things.

2) a. What are Homer and Hesiod guilty of?Misrepresenting the nature of gods and heroes.

b. What are the two main characteristics of “god” and what are the laws/principles of story telling based on those characteristics?1) Gods acts were good and just, and those being punished had benefitted from it.

It is impossible for a god to wish himself to change.

3) Compare what you wrote in your personal reflection above (#1) with what Plato wrote. How close were you to what Plato wrote?
I was off. He said to censor things because of what they made the gods look like. I thought they censored because of bad ideas that might spring up in people's mind.

Due 3/22

1) What do you think is the best definition of justice? It can be one of the views expressed in The Republic, a modification of one or more of them, or something completely different.

In my mind the best definition of justice to one is something that one feels is morally correct. Unfortunatly this does may not work for everbody, for instance if one person thinks that expressing yourself through violence is just, and another person thinks the opposite the morals collide and we have a situation that doesn't fit together. In the end, the only kind of justice that can work in a society is through some sort of compromisation. The best definition for justice in a society is a moral system that works to benifit everybody. This way everybody is happy and unharmed. Unfortunatly this is an example of a utopia that is not possible with our human society. People do not all share the same moral system and cannot function as a perfect whole without there being someone to screw it all up.

due 3/21

Prompt: In your opinion, how can acting “right” (i.e. justly) help or harm the achievement of happiness? In your answer you need to first establish, in true Socratic fashion, what you mean by "right" (justice) and what you mean by happiness. What do you think Socrates would say about what you wrote and/or what do you think Thrasymachus would say?

I think acting right could help your happiness because in the back of your mind all u need to do to become happy is to remember all the good things you did for yourself or other peole and forget about all the bad things. I think that socrates would probably ask a question trying to attract my thinking somewhere else and try to get me confused / get me to have another opinion.

Monday, March 19, 2007

due 3/20 republic assignment

1Q) Notice that our reading on Thrasymachus is divided into two parts. The first part is entitled – “First Statement and Criticisms”. In this first part, what are Socrates’ main argument(s) against the idea that justice is whatever the strong (i.e. the government) says it is?1A) Well, he mainly states that it would be a foolish way for things to be. Generally, politicians and leaders are always making decisions for their best interest, thus meaning what is in their best interest is the law, and anything else is against the law. But, if a leader gives an order by accident that hurts them, then it is against the law, but the leader gave the order so the people must obey it. It is cryptic talk of how backwards things would be in that case.2Q) In the second part – “Second Statement and Final Refutation” – what are Thrasymahcus’ two main points and what are Socrates’ two main points in response?2A)Thrasymachus' two main points are that 'justice is the interest of the stronger party' and that 'injustice is the interest and profit of oneself'. Socrates retorts with the points that 'no one really wants authority and with it the job of righting other people's wrongs, unless paid for it' and also that 'all wise men would prefer the benefit of this service at the hands of others rather than the labor of affording it to others themselves'.3Q) In your opinion, is it ever right to harm somebody? Why or why not? What would Socrates and/or Thrasymachus say in response to your answer?3A) It is absolutely never right to harm another person. Wise men do not fight with their fists, swords, or spears, they fight with their words and avoid the needless conflicts, and that is what everyone should do. In response to that, I believe that Socrates would completely agree that harming another person is never right. On the point of how wise men fight with their words, he might differ slightly. Mainly because most wise men can get others to fight for their cause through persuasion and wit(Agamemnon).

DUE Fri 3/16/07

Who are Cephalus and Polemarchus?
Polemarchus is a resident in Piraeus, the port of Athens

Cephalus is a Syracusan, and also an old man who believes that people should embrace old age. What is the profession of Cephalus?
Cephalus is old, and I think hes a philosopher? It is sort of hard to understand

What was Cephalus doing right before the discussion that took place?
Cephalus was sitting in a chair, sacrificing.

According to Cephalus, what are the virtues of old age?
When you are old, you must be happy with your life or you will be nothing but depressed, with nothing to look forward to but death. He says that you must forget all your troubles and then you will be content. What are Cephalus’ view of justice?

What is Socrates response?

Do you agree with Cephalus or with Socrates? Why?

If you don't agree with either of them, write about which one you think makes the stronger arguement - even if you think it is not "right" - and why?>>
I agree with Cephalus about the virtues of old age...he talks about men who just sit on their butts all day and disregard everything around them. They disrespect their family and don't look at anything optimistically. Basically, the old people are just waiting to die. Cephalus says that once you are old and content with your life, all the desires and sadness leaves your life and you are happy with being old. But then Socrates asks Cephalus about being rich, which Cephalus doesn't seem to care about much. So Socrates asks Cephalus if he actually made the money that he has or if he inherited it. Cephalus didn't make it himself, but he doesn't use the money for his advantage, so Socrates is surprised.

DUE THUR, 3/15 Similie of the Cave Reading Questions. Section Two

1. Compare and contrast what Socrates says in “The Simile of the Cave” with Fahrenheit 451. How are characters like Mildred similar to characters in “Simile of the Cave”?

1A) Well, they are exactly what Socrates speaks of. Those prisoners who are just chained up and don't question anything. Because in the book Bradbury says that the whole world is ignorant and only is attracted to media and such frivolous things. In F451, the society was controlled by the media, and brainwashed into believing that whatever the media said was real, and there was no need to question it because there wasn't any room for it to be wrong. I believe They are the prisoners who choose to be imprisoned. If you make a decision to be ignorant, like Mildred and many people used to do, then you are solidifying your belief that everything you are given by the governing body or belief is true, whether you really believe it or not.

LIAR

Recall a time that you heard a statement of “fact” that was later found to be untrue. It can be from a parent, a teacher, a friend, a government official, a book, or a film. How did you find out it was untrue and how did it make you feel? Did it change your outlook on anything?

I think that one time when i was little my parents always tried to make me eat veggies like broccolli and spinach but i thought i was such a mastermind and threw them behind my couch, which for one made it stink and my parents ended up cleaning behind the couch for some odd reason and they found them. a couple of weeks later they said if i ate my broccolli and did not throw it behind the couch that i would be able to play outside and have a great big bol of ice cream... that night i asked if i could have ice cream they flat out ignored me.

DUE FRI 3/2 Personal Reflection

1). Write about a time that your pride had negative consequences (or related to that, your inablity to forgive). You can also write about someone else or write about pride in another book.
Well one time i was playing football and i was doing real well. I thought i was so good that i good whoop on anyone who tried to play. so one day after school i was playing with some tenth graders and they wanted to play tackle so i agreed. I was getting smashed everytime i turned around. Im not saying I lost but all im saying is that i really paid for my pride.

2). How was your pride, or the other person's, similiar or different to that of Achilles?
well i really dont see a similarity between my pride and achilles except the fact that achilles and i were both prideful over a skill type of thing, for example footbal or fighting or running...etc..

DUE THR 3/1 Iliad Reading

1. What does Patroclus propose to Achilles and what is Achilles’ response? Why does Achilles grant Patroclus’ request? I think what Patroclus proposes to Achilles is that he wanted to fight the men who were going to set fire to the ships. I think Achilles let Patroclus do this because Achilles said in book nine that he would not fight unless fire was set to the ships so maybe he let patroclus fight so the ships would not burn.

2. On p. 413 line 35 (approximately), Patroclus tells Achilles that Achilles is “cursed in [his] own courage.” What does Patroclus mean by that and do you agree with him?
2.Well i think that patroclus is trying to say that Achilles is so courageous that it is possible to hurt his self and well being. I agree with patroclus because going back to the movie when he was the first one on shore and started fighting with about only 20 men, I think that it would have been possible for him to die because he was courageous.

3. Either ask questions about the text or write down vocab words from the text with definitions.

Tuesday, February 27, 2007

Illiad pg. 266-275 lines 521-869 due Wed. 2/28

1Q) Write a question you have about the text, either an interpretive question that you have an opinion on, or something that you don't understand. You don't need to write the answer.
1A)Is Achilles so encased in his pride he ingores his allies' cry for help?

2Q) What was your opinion of Achilles before reading Book 9? Does it change after reading Book 9? Explain why or why not.
2A)I see him as more arrogant than i did before, but then again it is slightly justified, so my opinion didn't change much.

3Q) Same as yesterday - Make a list of the persuasive strategy used by these characters
3A) Who is speaking?
Ajax

What does that person say and to whom does he say it?
He is speaking to Achilles, trying to persuade him to help the Achaeans.

What persuasive strategy is it?
Appeal to Reason

Why is it an example of that strategy?
Because he is trying to tell Achilles that he is being a fool with the situation, and that he is un-honorable for not helping his comrades.

Who is speaking?
Achilles

What does that person say and to whom does he say it?
hes talking to the people who went to reason with Achilles

What persuasive strategy is it?
Appeal to Emotion

Why is it an example of that strategy?
Because he is trying to tell the men that he should not have to fight for Agamemnon and that Agamemnom should be fighting in his own wars.

Monday, February 26, 2007

The Illiad Assignment Due 2/27/06

1.Write a question you have about the text, either an interpretive question that you have an opinion on, or something that you don't understand. You don't need to write the answer.
I really do not have any questions about the text so far. But overall I really like book nine it is a little interesting and is a nice book to read.

2.What was your opinion of Achilles before reading Book 9? Does it change after reading Book 9? Explain why or why not.
Well in this section the person i most saw a change in would have to be agamemnon because i thought he was a self centered guy who really didnt give a piss about anyone else. In this book he is a much better person and tries to make amends for what he had said earlier to Achilles but Achilles refused to accept amends. I did however see a change in Achilles because he is even more obnoxious and more of a trader and lets the achaens fall.

3Q) Make a list of persuasive strategies used by characters:Who is speaking?
Odysseus

What does that person say and to whom does he say it?
He is speaking to Achilles

What persuasive strategy is it?
Appeal to Emotion

Why is it an example of that strategy?
Because Odysseus keeps trying to use his words to make Achilles feel bad for the Achaeans, and use that sadness in order to make him fight with the Achaeans and help them kill the Trojans.

Who is speaking?
Achilles

What does that person say and to whom does he say it?
He is speaking to Odysseus and the men who went with him to see Achilles

What persuasive strategy is it?
Appeal to Reason

Why is it an example of that strategy?
Because Achilles tries to tell them his side of the story, and explain to them that it is illogical for him to go back on his word because it would impact his honor.

Who is speaking?
Nestor

What does that person say and to whom does he say it?
He is speaking to Agamemnon and Achilles

What persuasive strategy is it?
Appeal to Reason

Why is it an example of that strategy?
Because he is trying to tell them that the arguement they are having will surely mean the end of the Achaean army, because in one way they lose Achilles, and the other way the king loses his honor.

DUE THR 2/22 - Disagreements and Fights ...

well this may seem a little childish but when I lived in detroit I met a kid named Daunte and him and I were really good friends until one day after christmas break i had worn my brand new kobe bryant jersey and the new silver kobe bryant shoes. It had turned out that the same day Daunte decided he would wear the same outfit and he got so freakin mad at me and started yelling at me and finally he tried to fight me so i just punched him off of the slide then i ran to my house... The next day Daunte brought his older brother and were about to kill me when i went and told on him because i did not want to die. So i was able to stay in th Principles office the whole day and Daunte got in trouble.

DUE THR 2/22 Iliad Reflection - Book One

If you were an ancient Greek, which of the following statements would you agree with?
A) Achilles’ rage is justified and I support his decision not to fight, even if it means the Greeks might lose lots of men, or even the war itself.
Or
B) Agamemnon is the commander, as such he is in the right, and I support his decision to ask for Achilles’ war prize Briseis – even if it means that Achilles will sit out the war.

I myself would agree with achilles because of the fact that he does not want to fight because his king is being selfish and only cares about winning the war. I think that achilles stance is the best way to go because agamemnon is not even his king and he still is ordering him around like he is one of his own men and I agree 100% with achilles.

My Rage-Cause

3. Write a short paragraph of why you think that scene and the words Bradbury used were effective in representing fear. This is like the assignment from last night expect with Bradbury.4. If there are words you don't know write them down.
Later, I will ask you to write a paragraph from the perspective of one of the characters in the scene that uses descriptive words. This is in preparation for that. The idea here is that you are exposed to your classmates writing and the words they use effectivly, do the same with Bradbury, and then do your own.

2. What universal needs or desires are represented in this story? What needs/desires might be particular to the Greeks? If you have a hard time determining whether it is particular or universal that is okay, write about why it is difficult to choose.

In my opinion I think the most represented need in the story would have to be power. For example when all the gods eat thier children because they do not want the prophecy of their children overthrowing them.

Farenheit 451 pgs. 138-154

1. Write one or more questions that you have. Don't just say "I don't get it." Ask a specific question about what is happening in the story.
A). I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the book said whether or not the mechanical hound was programmed to attack people with books even if your a fireman yourself.?

Farenheit 451 pgs.126-137

Q: Explain what you find interesting or exciting in this part of the book.
A: The part that I found most interesting was when Montag was starting to cross the street to get to Faber's house. I liked this part because the way Ray Bradbury described his journey across the street was so great that i almost felt myself walking across a street. I have been in a position like this when i am so scared to look left or right because either im embarrased or I just am really truley scared.

Debunking 9/11 chapter 3 Big Plane Small Holes

Claim: Conspiracy theorists say that the holes made at the pentagon were much to small to fit a large Boeing 757 airplane. The holes were 16 feet across. The argument that the conspiracy theorists propose is how is it possible that a 125 foot wide and 155 foot long plane could fit into a hole only 16 feet across.

Fact: The fact states that the initial hole made was 90 feet wide and that the measurments that the Building performance report took said that the hole said by conspiracy theorists that was 16 feet wide was only because the building had crumbled 19 minutes after the crash which was obviously enough time to take measurements. The fact also states the fact that how could the winspan of 124 foot 10 inches wide fit into a 90 foot hole?. Well they say that an eye whitness named Frank Probst saw the crash and said that the two wings were destroyed by the power generator not too far from the pentagon.

Anaylisis: Well in my opinion i think that the claim would be the best way to go for two reasons. First the fact said that the building had crumbled 19 minutes after the crash which means they wouldnt have had enough time to measure themselves so were did they get the number 90 feet.? The final reason is their eye whitness Frank Probst, i mean the fact said that he dove out of the way right? So how is it possible to dive and be looking at the wings at the same time.?

Farenhiet 451 Pgs. 110-125

Q: Summarize what happens in one or two sentences.
A: I think that this part was a very interesting one in fact I rather much enjoyed it more than the rest of the book. Well Montag was caught with some books in his house and because your not allowed to have books he had to burn his house down and out of anger and retaliation he burned beatty to death.

Q: Copy down one sentence from this reading selection that strikes you as particularly descriptive. Which of the 5 senses does it appeal to? What verbs, adjectives, or figurative language are used and why are they effective in describing a certain action, person, or thing?
A: The sentence i found most interesting was : "The Books leapt and danced like roasted birds, their wings ablaze with read and yellow feathers." I thought this was interesting because the red and yellow birds described the colors of the fire and saying that they were flying described the sparks of the fire.

What I Most Enjoy

The large green grassy feild with beautiful white lines across it almost as a pinstriped suite, is very appealing to me just like a sun setting on the horizon of the ocean. When I first hear the large seats filled with excited fans reminds me of a bunch of barbarians roaring for their team to win and these barbarians' team were the almighty Balboa Raiders... The whistle to begin the game gives me the largest rush of adrenaline as the church bells to the Nuns. The contact is the best part in the game especially when you know you have just made a great play you dont wanna stop. Did you guess it? I enjoy Football!!!

Farenheit 451 Pgs.81-91

Q: Faber jokingly proposes a plan of action and then starts to discuss it seriously with Montag. What is the plan of action? More importantly, why does he say it won’t work? Analyze his answer. Why won't it work?

A: Faber says it won’t work for two reasons. 1: No one can set the fires. The second reason is that you cant trust anyone else. I think it would work because If you have books no matter your occupation your home should be burnt down.

Farenheit 451 Pgs.71-80

Q: Write a question about the reading. What are you confused about?
A: I did not understand why Professor Fabor hung up on Montag when he asked him about the books and how many copies were left...? I mean he was asking a simple question.

Q: What does Montag mean when he says that books "point, one way or another, to Clarisse?"
A: I think that Montag compares Clarisse to Books because Clarisse is always talking about the past and is always give her thoughts and i deas. She is also very informative and most books have the same characteristics as Clarisse.

Farenheit 451 Pgs.40-68

1. Captain Beatty tells Montag that firemen are the “happiness boys” and that they are custodians of “our piece of mind.”
This part of the story was when Montag was having doubts about his job and if he was doing the right thing by being a fireman. That is why Captain Beatty came to his house to clear things up for him and convince him that their job helps others in a great way. Beatty tells Montag that the greatest thing anyone could ever get out of life is happiness. Therefore, a job of a fireman is to make everyone happy. Beatty said, "Colored people don't like Little Black Sambo. Burn it. White people don't feel good about Uncle Tom's Cabin. Burn it." Basically, captain beatty just wanted guy to burn all his books.

What I Dread Most....

As I strut so confident towards the door pondering what is on the other side my heading is pounding with thoughts of WORK. I open the long piece of metal with glass flowing through the middle usually with a metal knob you twist for it to open almost like a bunch of men yelling to a wall saying OPEN SESAME! To my astonishment I see a man with a suit and he is standing tall as the Statue Of Liberty in New York, handing great deals of paper out almost as if he were a paper boy. I walk to the well groomed man who then says why are you late!!!

Farenhiet 451 pg.3-21

1.) The thing that confused me the most was about half of the readings because to me the writing was too descriptive and instead of realizing what was going on I was caught up in all the detail.

2.) The author conveyed the distance of guy montag and his wife when he was imagining his wife waiting for him in bed but then he said that that had not happened in two years. I thought that was how he conveyed their distance because normal couples are waiting in bed for eachother on a normal basis but he made it seem like the were a normal couple.

Farenhiet 451 pg. 21-40

1) What do you find confusing? What is something you don’t understand?

Why does the mechanical hound want to hurt Guy? It doesn't seem like he should - after all, he the dog is supposed to work with him..

2) Montag compares Mildred (his wife) to Clarisse and says that Clarisse seems older. In what way does Mildred act more mature and WHY do you think she is more mature? Why does Bradbury (the author) make the contrast between the two?

I think Clarisse seems more mature than Mildred because she relates to things from the past. Mildred seems to care about the present and expensive stuff, and doesn't give much though to anything or anyone else. Even though carisse is considered a weirdo because she doesnt d much of the things that the others either dont want to do because they are afraid of what people think but carisse is more of a down to earth person. If i were guy i would chose clarisse because she is a true person.
